Architecture students occasionally come up with some pretty impressive ideas that are actually practical, too. These homes are designed by an initiative called the 20K project. The clue is in the name! The idea of designing homes that cost only $20,000 dollars to build was a response to the housing crises that afflict many parts of the world with high-density populations. Students at Auburn University‘s Rural Studio have created sustainable and low-cost dwellings for the rural poor.
Each structure is a detached house with one bedroom and one bathroom, measuring around 500 square feet. The materials are corrugated metal and timber, they are elevated on piers and designed with passive heating and cooling in order to keep the utility costs low. The $20,000 price tag is to try to match the incomes of potential homeowners living on Social Security and are unable to qualify for commercial credit.
And they’re pretty nice looking too!
